24 Sep 2010:

If you are not aware of, Facebook is down today....

Early today Facebook was down or unreachable for many of you for approximately 2.5 hours. This is the worst outage we’ve had in over four years

It turned out that Facebook has released a fix that, and Facebook has described, ended up causing much more damage than it fixed. The problem is basically with that fix released, if a cached configuration is invalid, system will clean it up and try to cache it again by reading the data from database. However, if the data is invalid in the database, it ends up with a "feedback loop" and more and more requests will be made to the database from the clients.

Someone had even described this as a "self-DDoS" attack (DDos = distributed denial-of-service).

It sounds like that Facebook should do more testing and review on problem fixes before rolling them out....
